The microwave is part of the "American diet" for most households. Its a quick and easy way to eat. I haven't used the microwave in years and heat my food on the stove-top, steamer, or oven. It is definitely a slower process; but, its worth the wait for my health! Choose Health!

Recently, Vani aka "Food Babe" posted an interesting and very informative article on "Why it's Time to Throw Out your Microwave". I loved this article and had to share it with my patients.  I was fortunate enough to get in touch with the Food Babe team to get permission to share this article exclusively for my patients! The article is simple and gives advice for the top 5 reasons why consumers should be aware.  

So here we go, the Top 5 Reasons to Stay Away from the Microwave!

1: Microwaves were never researched before adoption.
  • Was developed 80 years ago
  • German soldiers from WWII used to warm foods
  • Germans and Russians later after release began to study its effects. 
  • Studies later revealed German soldiers developed cancers of the blood and that microwaves voided nutritional content of the food. 
 
2. The microwave destroy nutrient value of your food
  • Food that is generally vital with nutrients will go dead in matter after a few seconds.
  • Study in November 2003 issue of Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture: Broccoli cooked in microwave lost 97% of its anti-oxidant content.
  • B12 is known to become completely inactive once heated in microwave. 
  • Body cannot handle molecules that have irradicated and changed. 
  • Immunity and digestion is effected long-term
  • Breast-feeding: Essential disease fighting agents in breast milk are denatured and lose properties (lysozyme activity) for protection of your baby.

3. The microwave creates carcinogenic compounds in certain foods. 
  • Nutrition Action Newletter: reported leakage of numerous toxic chemicals  (BPA, Polyethylene terpthalate (PET), benzene, toluene, and xylene) from packaging of microwavable foods including pizza and popcorn to name a few.
  • Study published by the Educational Center in Portland, OR.: Carcinogens were formed in virtually all foods tested and no test food was subjected to more microwaving than necessary to accomplish purpose (cooking, thawing, or heating).

4. The microwave provide unnecessary daily exposure to radiation
  • Rapid movement of molecules and breaking down molecular bonds occur in the microwave.
  • Human cells are harmed and slowly destroyed when cooking or standing near an microwave.

5. The microwave can create severe health issues. 
  • Swiss Study conducted by Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel found significant and disturbing changes in the blood of individuals consuming microwaved milk and vegetables. 
  • Study tested: 8 volunteers ate various combinations of the same foods cooked different ways. All the foods that were cooked in the microwave caused changes in the blood volunteers. 
  • Results: Hemoglobin (Red blood Cells) decreased; White Blood Cells and Cholesterol increased; Doctor in this study was testing a cure for people who were had Chronic Fatigue. He found out and prescribed them to throw away their microwaves!!
