CHOOSE TRUE HEALTH: Red Cabbage Cancer Fighting Benefits

5/20/2015

Picture
Did you know that the time you cook cabbage can make a difference if it has cancer-preventative benefits? It’s true! The longer you cook cabbage it fails to prevent the vital measurable components to benefit fighting cancers. According to one recent study, cabbages that are raw or short-cooked keep the key vitamins that fight cancers. There has been over 475 studies just on cruciferous vegetables like cabbage that confirm the benefits of their cancer preventative components. The most notable benefits to share are that they are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and have an abundant source of glucosinolates. What is that? Glucosinolates is a chemical compound that is converted to isothiocyanate in our bodies. The conversion of this chemical leads to the important nutrient we need to fight bladder, breast, colon and prostate cancer. The most interesting fact about cabbages is that they are NOT equal in how much they contain glucosinolates. The different colors represent different nutrient density. So which is the best cabbage source for nutrients? It’s the red cabbage! The rich red color reflects a high concentration of anthocyanin polyphenols. The deep pigment intensifies the ability to protect your cells and prevent inflammation. Other health benefits of cabbages: High in Vitamin K, B6, Manganese and fiber. To throw in a little Chinese Medical knowledge, what does the cabbage resemble? A brain! We believe that the cabbage is great to help support your brain. Here is a pic from @mothersmarket of their awesome assortment! Cheers to the red brain that prevents cancer! Now you can think of that when you’re in the produce section!

Did you know that oranges do not have to be bright orange in order to be good? It’s true! Often an artificial dye called Citrus Red Number 2 is injected into the skin to give it a more uniform color for the non-organic oranges. Pretty sad, isn’t it? You need to inject color to market your orange? Oranges are naturally partially green and have discoloration even when they’re ripe. So you’re thinking, how do I choose an orange then? The best way is on the texture and weight! Here are some basic guidelines in choosing a juicy orange: skin must be smooth and firm. The weight must be heavy. The heavy and smooth oranges tend to have a higher juice content. Another cool tip, two weeks is a good time to keep organic oranges for their vitamin content. Now that you know how to pick and keep those oranges, lets talk benefits! Oranges are obviously known for their immune boosting properties, but did you know they reduce the risk of kidney stones? The British Journal of Nutrition found that women who drank 1/2 to 1 liter of orange juice decreased their risk of forming calcium oxalate stones. Interesting research and makes sense, regulating your body’s pH and excretion of citric acid. Happy Monday to you!! Cheers to picking the perfect orange and all its benefits! Good morning Orange County!!

Did you know that there is a vegetable that is related to the wild cabbage, full of vitamin C, detoxes your body and has major anti-oxidant effects? It’s true and its your vegetable friend the cauliflower! Cauliflower is part of the Brassica oleracea family, and you’re wondering what does that mean?! Basically its cousins are broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage and kale. Yes, kale too! Its believed that cauliflower traces back to the wild cabbage that resembled kale or collard greens. It obviously transformed over time and later came to look just like how we see it now. That’s the history, but the real deal is its health benefits. Its a cruciferous vegetable that has been studied for three major benefits: detox, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidize. It is nutrient-dense with 8 major phytonutrients and anti-oxidants that prevent oxidative stress on our cells. Next, there are two phases in detoxifying your body. Cauliflower has enzymes and anti-oxidants that play major roles in both of those phases. Aren’t convinced? Here is two other major nutrients you need to help support immunity and blood: Vitamin C at 73%, Vitamin K at 19% and folate at 14%.

Did you know that tomatoes are native to South America specifically Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Bolivia? It's true! You would think it was from all over the world. But it actually is not and travelled to Europe and Asia through Spanish Settlers. Thanks to them, we can get the benefits of its nutrients! Tomatoes are an excellent source of potassium, lycopene, lutein, vitamin C and manganese to name a few. The vitamins provided by a tomato helps curbs oxidative stress, supports vision, combats cancer and helps with cardiovascular health. If you think of it, a tomato looks like blood or the heart itself. It "bleeds" and it's supple like flesh. In Chinese Medicine it follows the Doctrine of Signatures meaning whatever it looks like, it helps! Tomatoes are nightshades, so that can also be a bit controversial for that nightshades are inflammatory and not always right for you. Ask your Acupuncturist if it is appropriate for you! We test your sensitivities and tolerance, info at www.myocacupuncture.com . We are herbal and food experts!

Choose True Health: Health Benefits of Maple Syrup

2/24/2015

Picture
Did you know that maple syrup contains anti-oxidants and minerals? It’s true! Maple syrup is rich in minerals of calcium, potassium, iron, zinc and manganese. Now don’t go running to the store and taking shots of maple syrup! However, this is what differentiates it from refined sugar. Different grades of maple syrup relate to the shade or darkness. The darker the grade the stronger the flavor. They are classified into two grades: A and B. Grades A is separated further into light amber, medium amber and dark amber. Grade B is the darkest of all the categories. You’re probably wondering why I am talking about something that is a sugar?! Well, its a great alternative to sweeten dishes over packing sugar! True maple syrup is full of zinc and manganese, 28% RDA and 165% RDA respectively. It is also has 24 different beneficial anti-oxidants to help combat free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in our bodies. Also, maple syrup consists of 65% sucrose and has less fructose than honey does. Today’s food is medicine recipe is a “remix” breakfast of my dinner: Turmeric and Thyme roasted chicken with butternut squash. The chicken was shredded in a skillet with roasted butternut squash and colorful carrots made into a hash. A little maple syrup was drizzled while the hash was sautéed in coconut oil. Last 2 minutes you add baby kale to steam. There you go! A natural sweetener and clean recipe to benefit your body!

{Breakfast of Champs!!} Did you know that thyme can help supports brain function! It’s true! Thyme has been used for many years for culinary, aromatic and even medicinal purposes. Thyme is known to have potent and volatile oils that includes caracolo, borneol, geraniol and thymol. All those components are known to have healing effects on the body. The Egyptians even knew the healing and potent effects of Thyme during their embalming practices. Thyme was often used as an agent to preserve the bodies. Interesting, right?? The most significant benefit of Thyme is the oil Thymol that helps support the cellular membrane and components. The oil significant increase the percentage of healthy fats in cells and increasing DHA. What the heck is that?! DHA is docosahexaenoic acid, basically its an Omega-3 fatty acid. DHA is amazing for supporting our brain, kidney and heart cells! One study showed that DHA changes the brain cells themselves helping to support the brain cells from the aging process. Today’s Food is Medicine recipe is from my breakfast this week! Yes, this was my breakfast and it was so good!! Marinated with all the brain and body supporting components needed, thyme, turmeric, garlic and himalayan pink salt!

Organic Ingredients:
4 Lamb Chops cut into 8 Lamb pops
Unrefined Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 teaspoon of Turmeric
Two Twigs of Fresh Thyme leaves
2 Cloves of Garlic smashed
Himalayan Salt to taste

In a large bowl, drizzle your olive oil and add spices. Start mixing ingredients with hand till all the lamb is coated. Marinate meat for minimum of 30 minutes. Overnight marination is best.

Pre-heat oven to 350 degree's. Prepare a cooking sheet with parchment paper.

Pre-heat a pan to medium heat. Place lamb in pan to sear for 3 minutes each side. Then place seared lamb on cooking sheet and drizzle oil over pops. Put in oven for 10 minutes, flipping every 5 minutes on each side. This is for medium rare meat. Caution that consuming uncooked meat can expose you to food-borne illnesses. Cook the meat to your desired preference.

Choose True Health: Winter Solstice

12/1/2014

Picture
{Pivotal Winter Solstice} Did you know its Winter Solstice tonight? It’s true! The heart of Chinese Medicine is Yin and Yang. December 21st (Winter Solstice) is not only the shortest day and longest night; but, its a balance point of yin and yang. Winter is a time to slow down, reflect and gather. Our body innately wants to rest, store energy and even yes gain a little weight! Winter is the yin aspect of yin and yang. Conservation and reflection during the winter is key. Overexertion during the cold months may lead to sports injuries, arthritis, back pain, and sleep disturbances. The winter season requires introspection, reflection, conservation, gathering, and going easy on your body. As the seasons change, your body will require an outgrowth of energy. This is the natural ebb and flow that our body creates in circadian rhythms. Our energy decreases gently during the winter, requiring an outburst in Spring. I wanted to honor tonight by reflecting the importance of this pivotal point both in nature and our bodies. Supporting your yin aka winter energy is essential for harmonizing and balance! Love this shot I took in Laguna Beach! You can see the yin and yang perfectly! Cheers to the longest night of the year and the pivot point for Yang!

11/1/2014

Picture
{Cheaper and Local} Did you know that 60% of farmer market shoppers in low income neighborhoods say their market has better prices than the grocery store? It's true! I've seen it with my own eyes even in other neighborhoods! Here's a couple tips about the farmers market: Walk around first and scope the scene, you may find the same thing less at another tent. ALWAYS ask if it's organic and local, not all items at the farmers market are organic or local. Waiting till the end of the farmers market may score you some deals! In the warmer months are asparagus, raspberries, strawberries and rhubarb to name a few. Look to see what is in season and purchase accordingly! Happy Shopping! This display is from Suzie Farms in San Diego, CA.!

10/1/2014

Picture
{Ionic and Bionic} Did you know that the ocean balance the polarity and ions in your body leading to a happier and calmer state? Its true! Plus there is a science behind the serenity effect of being on a beach or near waterfall. The constant crashing of waves leads to a high concentration of negative ions. The negative ions help balance the positive charges in your biochemistry. More negative ions, better blood flow to the brain and a grounding mental state. Benefits of negative ions: Better blood circulation, more oxygenated blood, eases depression, and boosts mood. Other facts, the negative ions help clean the air of allergens, odors and pollutants. Cheers to negative ions galore!
